I had very little knowledge about how to trace ancestors before reading this, and I found it very useful, especially Ros's personal examples that helped me to understand the information.

:: What information will I need in order to use this e-book?

To start tracing your UK ancestors, you will need to have some idea of which of your ancestors was born in the UK, and some idea of whereabouts in the UK they came from. If your ancestor was married in the UK, this would also be a good starting point.

:: How far back will I be able to trace my UK ancestors?

Most people can trace their ancestry at least to the 17th century - and potentially it is possible to go back as far as 1538, when parish registers began. Some wealthy or important families may sometimes be traced further back than this. However, there is never any guarantee that you will find ancestors - this depends on what documents or information has survived. This e-book gives you the best chance of finding your UK ancestors and helps you to solve some of the common problems.

:: What are the costs involved in tracing UK ancestors?

This e-book will advise you as to the best websites to use, and you will probably need to subscribe to at least one of these websites in order to use their indexes and view documents. However, mostly these costs are very low and you can do a lot of work without spending much more than around $20-$25 per month. However, if you go beyon 1837, you may need to hire a professional researcher to visit local archives if you cannot visit yourself.

:: How easy will it be to trace my Irish or Scottish ancestors?

While most of the advice in this e-book concentrates on English sources there are links and information for Irish and Scottish websites you can use. Much of the advice given in this book for using sources will apply to these websites.

:: I've heard that our family originated from the UK. Will this book help me to find out how?

This e-book starts with the assumption that you already have some information about your UK ancestors. If you do not have an idea of names and dates in the UK, you will have to start with finding further information in your own country first. Once you have this information, this e-book will help you to extend your UK family tree.

:: What qualifications and credentials does the author have?

I have a BA (Hons), First Class Degree in Humanities, in which my main subjects were English history and literature. I also have a Diploma in 19th & 20th century social history research.
